~ An Ordinary Morning (Revised) ~

This morning dawned with a damp, grey rain.

It drew the energy from me and I

wanted to crawl,

back behind my eyelids.

My heavy head sank, a slow-motion slip to the pillow,

as the rain’s rhythm tapped the glass and sang

me back to sleep.

I’m ripped from dreams by the clock.

The blaring alarm sends sharp nails

through my mind.  Slit eyes study red bars

that blink and shift into strict, numbered sense.

Bleary, weary, I know…

I must get up.

A soft paw on my chin – the cat’s awake.

His heat and rumbling purr motivate.

My thoughts turn to coffee, a cigarette, a hot shower.

I take my comfort where I can.

Sweet, hot java mixes with smooth smoke.

I sit and watch the drops drip down outside,

as the cat slinks like oil into my lap.

Later, I stand naked, under jets

and emerge, dripping, like this morning’s sky.

About dragonkatet

Regarding the blog name, Dragon’s Dreams ~ The name comes from my love-affairs with both Dragons and Dreams (capital Ds). It’s another extension of who I am, a facet for expression; a place and way to reach other like-minded, creative individuals. I post poetry and images that fascinate or move me, because that’s my favorite way to view the world. I post about things important to me and the world in which we live, try to champion extra important political, societal and environmental issues, etc. Sometimes I wax philosophical, because it’s also a place where I always seem to learn about myself, too, by interacting with some of the brightest minds, souls and hearts out there. It’s all about ‘connection(s)’ and I don’t mean “net-working” with people for personal gain, but rather, the expansion of the 4 L’s: Light, Love, Laughter, Learning.

    excellent descriptive

can sympathize w/the jarring alarm — why i gave them up. sometimes i think we call things “bad” so that we can enjoy them more (re coffee and smokes). mostly even if my body “wakes” up — the ‘mind’ doesn’t arrive until sometime afternoon 🙂 i admire those who take the day by the horns, even if it’s a rainy one.

Hey, thanks E! Lol…you may be right about the coffee and smokes…breakfast of champions haha. As a night-owl, my ‘mornings’ these days are after noon, but I think there is beauty even in the grey days – they’re under appreciated.

  3. fiveloaf says:

lovely coffee break haha! here’s my week 38 potluck.. http://fiveloaf.wordpress.com/2010/09/30/i-cant-hold-it/

  9. Mike Patrick says:

You have reminded me of the worst part of all those working years. I’m retired now. That’s the only advantage in growing old: no alarm, coffee is on a timer, a doggy door lets the critters in and out. Life is good.

    • dragonkatet says:

Lol…I can’t wait until I’m retired! (Still a long way away). That can’t be the only advantage though…I mean, look at how much wisdom you have now and how much you’ve learned! Life is good, indeed – sometimes it takes appreciating the ordinary moments to become aware of that. 🙂 Thanks so much for dropping by.

This is awesome I loved it!

  28. Jamie Dedes says:

All the sense used in describing your morning. A good choice to link to Victoria’s prompt and it flows with the sense of a story. Nicely done. Enjoyed much.

Thanks for coming out to play tonight, Corina. 🙂

  29. Corina, this reminds me of how effective writing (prose or poetry) can become when you use crisp sensory description AND verbs to describe them so you have that “show don;t tell” thing going on. Exceptionally graphic. And I want to go back to bed, now!

  30. Bodhirose says:

So enjoyed this. I am not a morning person and detest that alarm going off to wake me up…so could relate to this. Probably more helpful is that sweet kitty paw urging you to start the day. Great description and imagery in this, Corina…especially those eyes that just don’t want to open…and that “oily” kitty in your lap.
